Original, Genre-Defining Formulas
First in Fragrance
With a rebellious spirit, we've been creating original fragrances that have helped define the American spirit since 1752.
Our Number Six (1772) became George Washington's signature scent as America found its identity. Marem (1914) honors trailblazing artist Alla Nazimova, who conquered Broadway & Hollywood. Jockey Club (1840) defined Ivy Style’s rise in the 1940s. 2571 (2024) redefines scent, breaking gender and olfactory norms, to inspire future generations.

American Icons
A STORIED HERITAGE
For centuries, Caswell-Massey fragrances captured the reverence and respect of every day citizens, Presidents, fashion icons, and rock-and-roll outsiders.
We joke that we have the world's first influencer, George Washington, whose preferred fragrance was Caswell-Massey Number Six. We've also had the loyal patronage of President JFK, The Rolling Stones frontman, Mick Jagger and, silent film star Alla Nazimova.
An Iconic American Brand for a reason.

EMBRACING INNOVATION
CHAMPIONS OF CHANGE
Dedicated to innovation, we've embraced new fragrance capture technologies that allow us to recreate the distinct aroma of a flower or plant without needing to destroy it.
The Process:
- A glass headspace is placed around a hand-selected flower and a thin metal rod is inserted into its heart to capture the plant's aroma and natural oils.
- Next, a Master Perfumer removes the headspace and the rod, saves the oil, identifies the unique notes capture by the headspace (with their nose), logs them, and then recreates the notes they experienced in their workshops.
America was founded on the principle of discovery and exploration. We carry forward this legacy by championing the next evolution of environmentally safe fragrance production.

Standing on the shoulders of giants
Commitment to the Artistry of Perfumery
As an independent perfume house, Caswell-Massey prioritizes artistry in perfumery through the creation of scent compositions with Master Perfumers, who posses within them centuries of the collective dedication to the art of perfumery.

Enter the Iconic World of Caswell-Massey
Fine Fragrance

An American Original
Our Founding
Caswell-Massey began as Dr. Hunter's Apothecary in Newport, RI in 1752. To this day we remain the longest continually operating fragrance brand in America.

America's First Fragrance
Number Six
Number Six is the first fragrance produced and sold in the United States and it stands today as the longest continually produced fragrance in American history. It was the favorite fragrance of the first American President and Revolutionary War hero, George Washington.

The Sporting Scent of America
Jockey Club
Known as the first official "sporting scent," Jockey Club was the ubiquitous scent of Saratoga Springs and Churchill Downs race tracks. Eventually, it became the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy's, preferred scent: cementing itself in history.
Often duplicated, never replicated.

Divine Femininity
Marem
We originally created Marem in 1914 as a bespoke scent for trailblazing actress Alla Nazimova (née Marem Leventon), star of stage and screen, a daring film-maker, and a pioneer of female independence. Marem was just one of many iconic celebrities who have considered Caswell-Massey an essential everyday luxury, alongside other powerful female artists such as Joni Mitchell and Deborah Harry (a.k.a. 'Blondie').

A NEW YORK STATE OF MIND
Lexington & 48th
Ralph and Milton Taylor took over the business in the 1930s and operated Caswell-Massey for over 50 years, expanding globally from its iconic store at the Barclay Hotel in New York. They made the brand cruelty-free, introducing the first plant-based musks, and created many of our best twentieth-century scents. Our LX48 Eau de Parfum pays homage to our famed NYC flagship.

New Classics
Greenbriar
Caswell-Massey, with its origins in the Newport sailing and equestrian social circles, becomes an icon of preppie style in the 1980s. Greenbriar arrives in 1984 as an Oakmoss-focused update of the 1970's hit fougere fragrances; a new classic is born.

RETURNING TO OUR ROOTS
NEW FRONTIERS
In 2018, we launched our Living Floral partnership with The New York Botanical Garden as well as launch LX48—the first new fine fragrance launch from Caswell-Massey in nearly 50 years. These projects combine our centuries-old archives with the skill and knowledge of the finest perfumers and botanists in the world, to bring new and exciting collections to our customers.
